Biophysics is an interdisciplinary scientific field that originated at the interface of science about living and non-living nature. It uses theoretical and experimental methods from physics of molecules to the study of biological systems. Biophysics includes all levels of biological organization, from molecular level to entire organisms and ecosystems. Biophysical research intervenes in the areas such as biochemistry, nanotechnology, bioengineering, computational biology as well as system biology. Biophysics has become the bridge between biology, chemistry and physics, and therefore intervenes in several scientific fields, namely: chemical physics, physiology, biochemistry, photonics, molecular biology, medicine and nanotechnology.
The Department develops research mainly in the field of biophotonics, bioenergetics, biomaterials and electrophysiology, using cooperation with the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the International Laser Center (ILC) (www.ilc.sk) and the Slovak Technical University. A joint laboratory of biophotonics technologies was built at the Department in collaboration with ILC (obr. 1 a obr. 2). In the building process is a joint laboratory with the Institute of Molecular Physiology and Genetics of SAV, Laboratory of Measurement and Statistical Calculations, Laboratory of Electricity and Magnetism and Laboratory of Data Processing.
The Department is located at FPV UCM 3 posch. Hajdóczyho Street, Trnava.
In addition to pedagogical activities, the staff of the department is mainly devoted to research and development activities, takes part in numerous professional events at home and abroad, publishes the results of their pedagogical research work and participates in the activities of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Department of Biophysics FPV provides teaching of physics, biophysics and biophotonics for bachelor and masters students. The members of the department also lead bachelor and master thesis in the field of Biotechnology, Biology or Biomedical Chemistry and doctoral thesis in Applied Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry.
