Applied biology

The basis of the study program Applied biology is hisinterdisciplinarity. It connects the modern biological disciplines of microbiology, virology, molecular biology, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics with biotechnology, ecology, environmental studies and chemistry. They are complemented by social science, economic, technological, moral-ethical and managerial aspects, so that the graduate gets a comprehensive view of natural and social processes.

The aim of the program is to educate experts capable of independently, creatively and comprehensively solving interdisciplinary problems. Graduates are ready to apply modern biological knowledge in support of sustainable development, in the creation of innovative technologies in production practice, in the performance of decision-making functions in state administration or local government, as well as in the implementation of their own business or scientific research.

What the graduate will get:

• broad knowledge of biological sciences and related fields,

• the ability to use biological and chemical methods in solving practical tasks,

• orientation in the natural sciences and the ability to work with professional databases,

• experience with interdisciplinary research and the ability to analyze natural, technical and social processes,

• the ability to make decisions when solving problems and propose measures,

• practical skills in creating and implementing projects, including obtaining financing,

• habits of using own and others' knowledge to search for innovative solutions.

Graduates of the master's degree in Applied Biology they are ready to work in biological, ecological and environmental research, in manufacturing companies, state and public administration institutions, but also in non-profit organizations or in the private sector.

Graduates of the department Biology (2nd degree) are used in a wide range of biological or biomedical workplaces. They can work in research teams or independently, for example in the Slovak Academy of Sciences, at universities or in the departments of health, agriculture, forestry, food industry or environmental protection.

They are ready to handle the requirements of specialized institutions, including field work. You can find them at workplaces focused on modern technologies, v environmentally and ecologically oriented centers, but also in institutions of state administration, self-government or in private companies with a research-technological focus.

After completing the master's degree, graduates can continue in the doctoral program Molecular biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences UCM in Trnava or at other faculties with a similar focus at home and abroad.

Typical professions of graduates:

• specialist in research and development,

• laboratory technologist,

• specialist in sanitation and hygiene,

• teacher of science and professional subjects.

Requirements for applicants, method of selection and recommended personality requirements

Number of students admitted to the study program: 30
The basic condition for admission to a second degree study program is completion of a first degree study program (§56 ods 2of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on universities and on amendments to certain laws).
The admission procedure takes place without an entrance exam.
When being admitted to the chosen study program, the fact is taken into account whether the applicant completed the study program at FPV UCM in Trnava or at another university of a related field. The result of the bachelor's study is evaluated during admission to the master's study program. In the case of applicants from other faculties and completing a bachelor's degree in related fields, the composition of completed subjects in the first degree is also evaluated. When being admitted to the master's degree program in applied biology, it is recommended that a student complete the subjects molecular biology and microbiology at the bachelor's level of study.
