European Science Night is the largest science festival in Slovakia, bringing news and information from the world of research and innovation in an inspiring and unique way. European Night of Science takes place every year on the last Friday in September simultaneously at five festival locations. On September 26, the European Night of Science v festival took place in Bratislava, Košice, Banská Bystrica, Žilina, and Poprad. We had stands in these three cities:
Žilina
Booth name: The organized micro world of plants amid chaos The booth focused on the fascinating world of microplants—how to grow them at home, which seeds are suitable, and what conditions are necessary. In addition to observing the process of growing plants from germination to harvest, the stand also offered simple chemical experiments focused on the color reactions of anthocyanins, pigments found in colorful vegetables and fruits. The stand also included tastings of sprouts and microplants of various plant species. As part of the chemical experiment, visitors could try changing the color of anthocyanins at different pH levels and measuring pH with litmus paper using red cabbage.
Banská Bystrica
Stand name: Microscopic Universe: Assembling Life from Chaos into Unique Forms
At this stand, we observed how cells create all proteins and enzymes from DNA and the various forms they can take – from muscle cells to free-living single-celled organisms. The stand also offered an opportunity to learn more about organisms smaller than cells, such as viruses, and to try out the work of a plant virologist. We also offered visitors the chance to try out a simple and intuitive cardboard puzzle called "play with ribosomes." Visitors also had the opportunity to try out a light microscope and observe various types of permanent and native (living) cell preparations for themselves.
Bratislava
Booth name:Clean Water and Invisible Radiation – Science in the Service of the Environment
Visitors to the booth had the opportunity to see and understand the various methods of water purification used in environmental technologies today – ozonation, electrochlorination, electrocoagulation, and adsorption. A particle camera was also presented – a modern device used to demonstrate the permeability of various materials to different types of ionizing radiation.
Booth name: Applications of artificial intelligence
At this booth, we immersed ourselves in the fascinating world of artificial intelligence (AI). We presented innovative accessibility aids that, thanks to AI, open up new possibilities for people with specific needs. At the same time, the issue of AI agents in reinforcement learning environments was presented - intelligent systems learn to solve complex problems just like humans, by trying and learning from their own mistakes.
