TA week full of practical science for students of the Chemical High School in Hlohovec

During one week, students from the Chemical High School in Hlohovec took part in an intensive laboratory program, during which they tried out work in various fields of chemistry, biology and biotechnology. The program was aimed at developing practical skills, deepening theoretical knowledge and bringing real work in a laboratory environment closer.

At the beginning of the week, students focused on measuring radioactivity in the environment and became familiar with the basics of radiation hygiene and radioecology. With the help of specialized instruments, they measured the input dose equivalent and analyzed the presence of natural radioisotopes. They then investigated the properties of ionizing radiation and its penetration using a digital particle camera.

The next day was focused on biological analyses. Students prepared microscopic preparations of plant cells, observed the microflora of the oral cavity and carried out basic qualitative examinations of urine. These activities allowed them to better understand the importance of microscopic and diagnostic methods in practice.

In the field of plant biotechnology, they studied the influence of cultivation conditions on the content of photosynthetic pigments. They analyzed plant material and evaluated how different light conditions affect the amount of chlorophyll and carotenoids.

The program also included assignments from organic chemistry, where students practically tried out the preparation of phthalimide and Schiff bases. They became familiar with the course of condensation reactions, the isolation of products and the methods of their purification and identification.

The end of the week belonged to modern approaches in bioinformatics. Students worked with digital records of plants, analyzed stress manifestations and learned how to properly process and present experimental data using graphs.

The week was a valuable experience for the students, which allowed them to gain insight into various areas of natural sciences and develop their practical and analytical skills. At the same time, it strengthened their interest in further study and application in the field of science and research.
